The Enchanting Temple of Aphaia: A Glimpse into Ancient Greece
The crown jewel of the island is the renowned Temple of Aphaia. This ancient temple is a part of Greece’s sacred architectural heritage and dates back to around 480 BC. Remarkably, even after centuries, 25 out of the original 32 Doric columns still stand tall.
The Temple of Aphaia is situated on a hilltop on the island, offering panoramic views of its surroundings. It is located within Aegina’s Sanctuary complex, approximately 13 kilometers to the east of the main port.
Exploring the Sanctuary Complex: Beyond the Temple
The sanctuary itself consists of various structures, not limited to just the temple. At its center lies the temple, surrounded by enclosing walls. In addition to the temple, there is a large altar with a paved pathway and a ramp leading to it.
On each side of the ramp, you can find four bases, likely intended for supporting other statues. This altar was used for burning offerings. Additionally, there are foundation remnants of two buildings on each side of the altar, which might have served as open structures for housing more statues.
The Legend of Aphaia: Guardian of Seafaring Souls
According to legend, Aphaia is not only a mountain but also a hunting goddess who protects seafaring vessels. The name “Aphaea” is believed to have originated from an incident where Aphaea escaped the nets of sailors near the coast of Aegina.
She was reportedly seen ascending the temple hill until she disappeared, hence the name “Aphaea,” which means “vanish.” Aegina has long been and continues to be a significant hub for shipping in the region.
