Easter in Corfu ! (part 1)

Easter is undoubtedly the biggest event of the year in corfu. It is held each year with glory and splendor not seen anywhere else in  Greece , and even in the whole world. Corfu Easter is a huge celebration that brings thousands of visitors each year to the island and gains in momentum for 10 days leading up to the great Resurrection Mass itself.

-Starting with the Palm Sunday that a procession of saint Spyridon takes place with all philharmonic orchestras(bands )of the island  accompanying him. This is like a prologue.According the tradition saint Spyridon saved the island of a deadly plague that hit Corfu in 1629.

-Moreover , we have the great week when the Liston street (the Main Street and most popular of Corfu) is decorated with purple lights which symbolize mourning. Lots of events take place these days such as the music and poetry evening , all churches, the Unctions are sung, and the Municipal Choir gives its own color and tone with a concert of church music, Holy Thursday is the day in which locals paint the red eggs and more.

-To continue ,we have the Good Friday that before the noon thousands of people go to the churches for the ceremony of the Descent of Christ from the Cross and the circumambulation of the dead Christ on a white sheet in an emotional atmosphere and the funereal ring of the bells. Then starts the the circumambulation of the Epitaphs , which comes out after 10 pm, accompanied by a philharmonic orchestra ,schools, scouts and groups of little girls carrying baskets full of flowers, on the streets, alleys and squares of the old city and the suburbs.
